Tips on How to Survive Ortho Treatments Easily

Orthodontic treatments usually have to do with the acquisition of a brand new set of metal chompers – braces. But as we all know, trips to the ortho can sometimes be a nightmare. Pain, mouth sores, and the inability to eat hard or sticky foods are just some of the difficulties one experiences from receiving ortho treatments. Luckily, there are a number of simple and easy ways to survive a trip to the ortho and grow into chompers.

Brush 3 times a day

While it may be tempting to skip out on brushing regularly, on the account of how difficult it is to brush with braces on, it is important to maintain proper oral hygiene. Brush 2-3 times a day, or after every meal to avoid enamel damage and cavities.

Get special tools for easier oral hygiene

For those hard to reach places, most dentists have interdental brushes ready for you. Try to find fluoride mouth rinse too to keep those teeth healthy.

For mouth sores, there’s always wax

Many metal-mouths complain of constant mouth sores and swollen lips from their braces scratching on the inside of their mouths. Luckily, dentists usually sell special wax to cover brackets that may be aggravating an already scratched up part. It won’t prevent sores from occurring, but it’ll ease the pain and keep it from getting worse.

Soup and soft food for the first few days

Every trip to the dentist is another opportunity to immerse yourself in a couple of days of pain and not being able to eat all your favorite foods. Plan ahead and stock up on your favorite soups and soft foods instead. If you’re not into soup, there’s always oatmeal, porridge, and even ice cream!

Avoid hard and sticky food

Everyone knows that a person with braces’ number one enemy is hard and sticky food. If you want to avoid destroying your brackets and getting gunk all over your wires, avoid diving headfirst into your food. Instead, slice up crunchy and hard foods like apples into small, bite-sized pieces.

Avoid sugary and acidic food

Sweets, soda, and foods that are high in in acid content, such as spicy foods, may compromise your dental health. They could lead to enamel damage, especially for those with braces, as the gear makes it difficult for most to brush off the food we eat completely.

See your dentist regularly

Your dentist adjusts your braces at every appointment, bringing you a step closer towards your dream teeth. So make sure to keep those appointments in order to avoid delaying getting that perfect smile you’ve always wanted.
Ortho treatments can be a huge pain, literally. But if you remember these simple tips, you’ll get the hang of having those braces in no time. And eventually, every trip to the dentist ill no longer be the worst day of the week, but instead, one step closer towards getting those perfect, shiny teeth.
